Le Garde Champetre

Le Garde Champetre

Here’s my current favourite restaurant in Champagne. And if I change my mind, I’ll tell you when another gem pips this one. This is not some desire for snobby foody obscurity, choosing the remote to be cool. I’ve visited the well-known good eateries of Reims and Epernay far more often than this one. But every time I’m here, my heart sings and usually the food does too. I can’t say I’m a regular, maybe six meals there over a couple of years. But few places, each time I leave make me feel on cloud nine, spiritually re-victualled, or at least that these people have some idea about how to feed us and make us happy and that especially tweaks a bit of the DNA coding my basic needs. To visit you will need to be in that far flung but champagne rich southern quarter of Champagne called the Aube or Cote des Bar. It’s about two hours drive south from Reims. And then you are in the village of Gyé-sur-Seine. You’ll find a car park next to the now defunct railway station. The sort where trains stopped only once a day. And smoke came out of the engine. You should come of course planning to expore this sub-region of Champagne more and it’s easy to find places to stay, even if you decide to base yourself in much more urban Troyes.

Check them out and I dare you not to have a good time. https://legardechampetre.fr/
