Champagne Marie Courtin

At long last after visits and discussion over time forming a friendship, we have been granted a precious allocation of this internationally-coveted micro producer in the Aube.  Dominique Moreau cultivates just a 2,5ha contiguous parcel of lieu-dit ‘Tremble’ in the village of Polisot, in the southern Aube, near Les Riceys.  The estate is named after her grand-mother.  She is certified biodynamic, so viticulture is as pure as possible with no herbicides or pesticide and painstaking care.  She uses both enamelled steel tanks and barrel techniques and yeasts are from a certified organic source for both fermentations. No filtration or fining. A low sulphur regime but extreme care to maintain freshness. The wines, largely 100% Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs, show an aethereal texture and purity of expression and beguiling citrus, plum and creamy ripe sweetness as well as intense minerality. The wines are not dosaged or hardly at all. Scintillating wines at the leading edge of Champagne s new wave producers of purity with claims to be fine wine worthy of attention, not just bubbly fun.

This estate is the sole independent grower or RM (Récoltant-Manipulant) in Sillery Grand Cru. Yet this village in the 17th century was, with Aÿ, the most famous Champagne wine, then mostly still, not bubbly. Sillery, on the northern Montagne de Reims, normally Pinot Noir central, grows more (48%) Chardonnay than any grand cru outside the […]

      Champagne Vazart-Coquart

Exclusive to the UK via Scala Wine, this producer sits in the elite of single estate (‘grower’) champagne. Jean-Pierre Vazart has 11ha of vines, all in the grand cru rated village Chouilly on the Cote des Blancs. All of his wines are therefore ‘grands crus’. Jean-Pierre is restless, driven, and obsesses about quality and the […]

The estate is tiny (3.2ha, making some […]
